Black Screen of Death

The security company Prevx, which in this mornings Metro newspaper claimed a Microsoft security patch causes a so-called Black Screen of Death that disables your PC. I had to check this out how to see how true it was. According to reports accross the Internet, they have admitted they were wrong.

Apparently Prevx last week claimed that the November 10 Windows security updates changes the Access Control List in the Windows Registry, which causes the Black Screen of Death. Microsoft claimed yesterday the patch was not at fault.

The funny thing is Prevx has admitted that as well. On a company blog, director of research Jacques Erasmus admits that the Black Screen of Death is in fact caused by malware, not by the Microsoft security patch. He also stated, "We apologise to Microsoft for any inconvenience our blog may have caused."

So Prevx (i have never heard of until today) have given themselves a bad name for jumping to conclusions. The fact is, Windows 7 works, and it works well... People are to busy trying to find faults with it. I still have not encountered any real issues. Malware, Spyware and Viruses are more abundent on Windows as it is the most popular OS out on the market.

Windows 7

Having had a late night re-installing Windows XP on my colleagues computer, I went home rather happy that i had done a good job. To be honest I think what made it enjoyable is the fact that she had all her original Install disks. This is something all PC/Laptop owners should have and never throw them away. Otherwise, one could spend over a week trying to order the build disks from the supplier.

I shall soon be looking for a new Laptop. Mine has been given up for dead which is very painful.
At work i enjoy Windows 7 Release Candidate. It is pretty robust and i haven't had many needs for restarting due to a crash. My only issues have been:

1, Connecting via RDP to a server and then hopping on to Terminal Service Manager and viewing others Desktop session. It tends to kick me straight off. Admittedly i haven't investigated as i am too lazy.

2, Kasperky Antivirus doesn't seem to want to work too well (Corporate Edition) This is a big issue that i have only just come to realise and will need to sort out if i am going to purchase Windows 7.

3, The XP emulation is a big pile of arse. Why include it? i see it pointless. If technology is to evolve then XP is to become obsolete. It's 9 years old for christs sake!

4, It has crashed twice on me. Mind you, i do run MSSQL server, multiple RDP sessions, Winamp, and multiple tabs of IE8 (which aint half as bad as you'd expect. Let's put it this way, I haven't yet installed Mozilla's Firefox) and i only have 1Gig of RAM.
